Swansea – 19th
Top Goalscorer: Leroy Fer – 4 goals
Player of the season thus far: Modou Barrow
Swansea find themselves sat in 19th with 5 points after 9 games having won just one match this season. However, Swansea have had arguably the toughest string of fixtures of any team this season. In their first nine games they have already played the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Leicester and Southampton. Additionally, they have been competitive in all of those matches and were unlucky to lose a couple of those games. Therefore, we think their 19th place in the table is an unfair reflection of how good a team they really are. Impressively, Leroy Fer has already bagged 4 goals from midfield and Modou Barrow has proved to be a thorn in the side of numerous full backs this season. Though they do sit on just 5 points after 9 games, there is hope going forward for the Swans.
Prediction going forward: Their fixtures become increasingly easier in the coming months of the season but that means they must get results now. Despite a tough start, they do have easier fixtures to come. With the closeness of the league early on, a couple of wins on the spin will see them out of the relegation zone despite their woeful start. Swansea have enough quality in their side to get away from the relegation zone and we think they’ll do it fairly comfortably come the end of the season.
Tottenham – 5th
Top Goalscorer: Son Heung-Min – 4 goals
Player of the season thus far: Son Heung-Min
Tottenham are the only team in the Premier League after 9 games who’ve yet to lose a game. However, due to their inability to convert draws into victories, they find themselves sat in 5th position. Incidentally, with 19 points, they are just 1 point away from top of the table in a season that at the moment, appears to be anyone’s to take by the scruff of the neck. Tottenham have started well considering how poorly last season ended for them. In the form of South Korean international Son Heung-Min Spurs have well and truly found a talisman. He has scored goals, created them and been a general menace to opposition defenses every game he’s played in this season.
Prediction going forward: Spurs have been unbeatable this season and have faced some difficult opponents. Much of Tottenham’s success has come without star front man, Harry Kane. Once he’s back in the squad, they’ll look a much more complete outfit. Additionally, with his presence, it’s much more likely they’ll turn games that would be draws into victories with his ruthlessness in front of goal. Tottenham look very good thus far and could right all the wrongs of last year if they continue playing how they are.
Watford – 9th
Top Goalscorer: Etienne Capoue – 4 goals
Player of the season thus far: Etienne Capoue
Watford have opened the season with a fairly tough run of games. Despite playing Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal and Southampton already they are doing fairly well to find themselves in 9th. Through their all action midfielder Etienne Capoue leading by example, they have been decent going forward. Their defense has been somewhat leaky but they find themselves a comfortable distance away from the drop zone. Watford have quality players yet some of them like Odion Ighalo and Isaac Success are yet to hit form just yet this season. If these men among others can step up, Watford could have a really decent season and surprise some of the top teams as Manchester United found out earlier in the season.
Prediction going forward: We expect Watford to pretty much stay in and around their position that they’re currently in throughout the season. They’re too good to be dragged into the relegation dogfight but not decent enough to rub shoulders with the title contenders. They could prove vital in both the title and relegation race as on their day they could beat most teams. However, as Burnley showed, if you catch them cold, you can steal some points from them. Watford are one of the more exciting middle of the table teams this season.
West Brom – 13th
Top Goalscorer: Nacer Chadli – 4 goals
Player of the season thus far: Nacer Chadli
West Brom are yet another one of those middle of the table teams who seem to be just there in the Premier League. They are not among the big boys but they do not seem to be able to be thrown in with the relegation battlers. As any Tony Pulis side seems to be set up, West Brom are a team built on not losing as oppose to actively winning games. However, with that being said, if it wasn’t for two late goals against them in two separate matches which ended in draws for West Brom, they could be sat on 16 points which would see them incredibly all the way up to 6th place.
In Nacer Chadli they have found a player with a point to prove. His versatility in the final third of the field as a scorer and creator is coming to the forefront. In fact with 4 goals and 2 assists, Chadli has be a part of more than half of all West Brom’s goals which highlights his importance to the Baggies. West Brom have the quality to avoid relegation but will need to be better against teams around them to ensure they steer clear of it entirely.
Prediction going forward: West Brom now have the individual talent to get them results in games they previously would not have. Nacer Chadli has become worth his weight in gold. If he continues like this, he could be on course for one of the best year’s of his career in the Premier League. The simple formula for West Brom is to beat the teams you’re expected to and give the teams above you a difficult game. Survival will be secured with games in hand if West Brom can follow this formula.
West Ham – 15th
Top Goalscorer: Michail Antonio – 5 goals
Player of the season thus far: Dimitri Payet
West Ham have undoubtedly been the biggest disappointment of the season so far. Expectations of this team were very high coming into this year’s campaign. They brought in more seemingly quality players in the forms of Simone Zaza, Andre Ayew and Sofiane Feghouli. However, none of those players have lived up to their billing. Additionally, their move to the Olympic stadium seemed only to hinder them early on in the season. After a narrow win against Bournemouth, they were hammered in back to back games at home by Watford and Southampton respectively.
Despite their woeful start West Ham have climbed away and out of the relegation zone with back to back 1-0 wins. One over Sunderland and the other over Crystal Palace. Early on in the season Michail Antonio was scoring for fun but has failed to net in his last four Premier League matches. One player who can hold his head high is Dimitri Payet. The fantastic Frenchman continues to show his class at the highest level of English football. Despite only scoring one goal this season in the league, he has assisted on 4 of the Hammers other 8 goals. Additionally, his one goal that he’s scored is one of if not the best goals scored in the league this season.
Prediction going forward: West Ham will definitely not be anywhere near 15th come the end of the season. They have had almost as bad a start imaginable and they are not in the drop zone. With the class of players they have they should finish middle to just inside top of the table. We expect them to find some form later on in the season and upset some of the bigger teams too.
